Optimizing Summer Balcony Flower Cultivation: Technical Approach
Summer vacation is an ideal time to immerse ourselves in nature, relax and feel our lives, and many people grow some lovely flowers on their balconies. In recent discussions on the Flower Forum, many gardening enthusiasts can feel the growing popularity of micro-gardening, which is most notable for growing heat-resistant flowers in compact urban environments. Our scientific approach, combined with insights from contemporary flower research, hopes to create efficient balcony gardens.
1. Choose the right flowers
According to the Flower Forum's Sunlight Requirements Index, south-facing balconies with more than 6 hours of direct sunlight are suitable for planting:
African marigold: grows lushly in USDA zones 2-11 and also has insect repellent properties.
Petunia: due to its creeping habit, it is well suited to vertical cultivation systems and has been tested for resistance to UV-B radiation.
Lavender: drought resistance and interesting pollinator attraction.
2. Precision cultivation techniques
Substrate optimization
Use a 3:1:1 peat moss-perlite-vermicompost mix (pH 6.0-6.5) in line with FLF’s balcony substrate guidelines, ensuring:
Bulk density <0.8 g/cm³
Water holding capacity >60%
Irrigation management
